Hey Erik, normal maps are for scoundrels and witches! But if you are determined to go down that route I suggest taking a gander at this tutorial http://pixologic.com/zclassroom/homeroom/lesson/environments-with-tate-mosesian/ And doing some verrtex blending in UDK: http://www.polycount.com/forum/showthread.php?t=68089
I think you should sculpt out your models. This type of detail will be much easier to do with inside of Zbrush (use a lot of subtools/extract meshes). Unless you're doing CRAZY up close renderings, super super high level accurate detail on the piece isn't necessary. Instead of tedious, I maybe would replace that with a…
For the Noisy Cricket's handle, I'd do it in Zbrush using the method from Joseph Drust's "Surface Variation-Surface Noise" video: http://pixologic.com/zclassroom/homeroom/lesson/helmet-design-with-joseph-drust/#surface-variation-surface-noise Hope that helps!
pixologic.com Zclassroom. for Zbrush tutorials. http://www.pixologic.com/zclassroom/homeroom/ also I havent used marmoset engine so I dont know how the display looks like. I am still surfing their website for their terms to use their tool commircially. =\ Nice work though.
I think the Zbrush site is probably a good idea. They have tons of free tutorials there that really break down all of the tools. They're really easy to follow as well. http://pixologic.com/zclassroom/homeroom/

Take time to decide on a topic; this is pretty important; oftentimes grandiose things like elaborate suits of armour, or dragons, are more flashy…
Ok. i think its not really clear what i tryed to do here. I followed this video instruction for my wall: http://pixologic.com/zclassroom/homeroom/lesson/environments-with-tate-mosesian/ My problem now is: As you can see on the following pictues. I loaded a texture in and filled my material with it. After this i wanted to…
I would maybe not go with the large complex (expensive!) major applications. But it depends a little on what might suit your son. Is he already keen on art? Does he draw a lot? Then encouraging his artistic side with something free like Sculptris http://pixologic.com/sculptris/ and a (very cheap Bamboo) graphics tablet…
ZBrush's Spotlight feature does a good job of painting over seams. It's essentially vertex painting, so your UVs do not need to be laid out before painting a model. http://pixologic.com/zclassroom/homeroom/lesson/spotlight/
