i have cleaned it up :) . the sides of the pillar isn;t flat....i added surface wear on mine so the surface undulates. also if you optimse it too much and remove alot of the inner edges you'll get smoothing issues which will affect your normal map bake. I've tried rremoving all the inner edges and let the NM do the work… -

One thing is that what happens on a flat surface that's separated by a smoothing group or reigned in by a support loop or custom vertex normals basically doesn't matter for the shading. And then, the local detail you added along the longer edges of the indentations seems only partly necessary and the way you terminated it… -

Yo fritz. Smoothing groups are just a quick way to add hard edges to a mesh. They don't affect sub-division, unless you specifically tell Max to do so, and they generally do not translate between programs. Better to use bevels or chamfers, those do translate between apps. The "smooth" modifier would give back the smooth look.After you added this to your mesh, you can check the "auto smooth" checkbox, and you can set the maximum smoothing angle with a slider. If not working, then add reset xform, and try to add the smooth modifier again. -

No problems mate. For the cage, did you try a raycast instead of a controlling the cage? I usually get clean results in one area for the cage and another for the raycast, so your mileage may vary. As for the groups, not really, Turbo smoothing should take care of that for the high poly, but the problem could be the LP's… -

To your questions: A. I would model the geometric shapes with basic sub-d, and do the font and small scratches and such in the texturing phase, there is no need to go to zbrush for this sort of work, photoshop is going to be much faster. I'll see if I can find some time later to whip up a quick sub-d bullet mesh later.…
