good ol' photoshop, or something else like zbrush polypaint or substance painter? Or a combination? I'm kind of on the fence about getting substance for this purpose, but I'd like to hear what you guys do. I've heard substance painter is kind of misleading for this purpose, but those posts were like 2 or 3 years old.

Would something like these raised and cracked surfaces be something sculpted as secondary forms? Or would they be more randomly generated with Substance Painter? I figured the latter, but then I'm wondering if even things like this would be intentionally designed?
