MentalRay is a lot better with alphas from my experience Plug your map into the the transparency slot. In the alpha map attributes there is a drop down box for Color balance. Collapse that menu and check the box saying 'alpha is luminance' dunno why but it works
Hey guys, I have an issue about how to create sparkling light effects in 3ds Max. If possible with mentalRay or Scanline, no VRay. Here is the concept with the effect I am trying to achieve: So it is supposed to represent a flickering, living light. Like from a willow wisp. Is that possible with lights? Or would you use…
Trying to flesh myself out a bit better than just animation and rigging. Here's an animation I did as a test for Next Level games. Anyone want to give me any dirt on em? Link Gotta get back into lowpoly work. This is a mixture of highpoly modeling and low poly with crappy maya render.(too impatient for mentalray)
Hi guys, has been a long time no post here, here is my new WIP, I back Unreal this time for my character work. this is from MentalRay...I give up it for this one :P now i come back Unreal 4
Thanks, I am sorta a noob with MentalRay. I am having issues with the model rendering black, and I cannot figure it out. I have a light in the scene, but it just looks terrible. Thanks is why I am looking for an introduction to figure out what I am doing wrong. And to learn the correct way of using it. Thanks
I find its easiest to render a skylight pass in Max - this gives you a decent AO pass (I use a mentalray AO as well) that doesn't give you shadows around your floaters as it uses a different calculation method for its shadows. Then I just mask between the two, using whichever gives me a better result.
Stuff like this is difficult because it may be a useless step for you but for many people, photometric is what they want/should use. I doubt you'll see this one change especially since max has been pushing the whole MentalRay+Photometric Lights+LinearWorkflow+MR Photographic Exposure and I don't blame them, it results in…
Hey guys, Does anyone know how to turn Mentalray on in Max 2012, the renders people get out of that look amazing, and i cant seem to get anything of the sort so i think my mental ray is turned off, any suggestions? Many thanks Kiwi
This is a sewer type level I made with an image of "The Witcher" game as a reference which is yet to be released. This is the scene I tried to recreate. Using the excellent Tinman tutorial I used a mental ray shader for the window glow but unfortunately it's not supported by mentalray or scanline and I haven't found a…
What file format are your textures? If any of them are .tiff/.tif convert them to something else because MentalRay doesn't like them. Have you changed your render settings at all since just clicking the create physical sun/sky button?
