Light Effect: Sparkles

Hey guys,

I have an issue about how to create sparkling light effects in 3ds Max.
If possible with mentalRay or Scanline, no VRay.

Here is the concept with the effect I am trying to achieve:

So it is supposed to represent a flickering, living light. Like from a willow wisp.
Is that possible with lights? Or would you use particles?

Thanks in advance!

Use particles, give them an emissive material, use glow effect from the effects panel, adjust settings to taste. Considering your concept there, be sure to use collision and adjust lifespan to meet your needs.

Honestly, though, this kind of thing is generally best handled by some other app. 3ds Max isn't a great post processing tool. Considering this technique is post processing and not real time means that if you want to reflect any of the glow, then it won't happen. At that point, you'd have to draw the glow reflections in manually, at which point, you might as well consider doing that from the start.

You should use post effect software for this stuff.
