You pay about 33% more for about 33% more speed, in terms of high end CPUs a linear price jump means an excellent value. Just look at the $600/$1000 intel cpus and the performance jump you get there, the $100 is certainly worth it for the I7, unless you simply do not have an extra $100, than an I5 is fine i'm sure. -

My best guess here is you're exporting with a material applied to the mesh that has the texture tiling more than 1.0. Exporting for UDK, you need to have only textures that are set in your max materials to tile 1.0, otherwise it seems to compensate for the tiling by stretching your UVs on export. What does the brush fall off curve look like? This effects how the edge of your brush blends. Are you using 2009 or Mud 1.0? They smoothed a lot of the brushes in 2009, there where problems in 1.0 with stair steppy and blobby brushes, even with smooth falloff curves. Have you tried other brushes?
