What is the best retopo tool out there?
Hiya, as the title asks, what do you guys find to be the fastest most efficient tool out there currently? I'm opened in trying anything as this is honestly STILL the most tedious and time consuming stage in production :( I've used 3DC, currently Maya LT, Topogun and now looking into Retopoflow… -

I'm unfamiliar with 3dc but your naming conflict might be solved if it works on matID. Sounds like you have exported your 3 meshes from your 3d package with the same default material applied. Try applying 3 separate materials with appropriate names before export. -

As Dustin said, either do it in the Texture area or use a specific package (Maya, 3DS Max). Zbrush, unfortunately doesn't have the required tools to do such a thing easily enough. I'm sure you could sculpt it in 3DC or Blender, I do not think substance would work for this unless you're just looking to use it as a tileable texture. If you need something that actually looks like a chipped blade you're going to have to sculpt the details and bake it. Would love to be proven wrong tho... -

Ah yes, that makes sense, as Josh said, it depends to you. I use XNormal for it's speed and standardized Tangents because it's a simple click and forget progress. Oh, you want to bake them, well other then 3DC and xNormal, I don't know how you would be able to bake V-Colors without jumping through hoops in other apps. In the case of Max, you need to put up the Vexter Modifier, enable the material to support Vertex, and bake it out to another mesh, and it still might give issues. -

I vouch personally for Mudbox and Blender in this regard. Photoshop is a nightmare. ZBrush is based upon Vertex painting. 3DC has some amazing ideas and killer tech behind it which isn't polished. there is a utility in the utilitys tab called 'channel info' that will let you copy and paste mapping data between channels. utilities - more -> channel Info. seeing all these hacks makes me wonder why the hell there isnt dxt format that stores 2 channels specifically for normal maps.
