maya 2014 have a really nice retopology tool. worth a try. Mudbox is nice for sculpting. But there is a big lack of "ready to use tools". You can pretty much do everything on mudbox, but is a lot of manual work.
Yeah, Viewport Canvas had so much potential and it is very convenient to use. Hope Autodesk fixes it. Seems a lot of ppl are complaining about 3dsmax 2017. I am still using 2014 version lol.
Sorry to bump this, but it's unnecessary to create a new thread when there's already a thread. Just curious how you run the HKLocalTools mentioned in the OP? Nothing happens when I run the script in the script editor. Is it compatible with 2014?
I mean, the nature of your approach should allow this to work on many hardsurface models out of the box, but fair enough, it's not the focus right now. I did find this. http://peterwonka.net/Publications/pdfs/2014.TOG.Chihan.QuadExploration.final.pdf

Hello, so I created my first ever 3d model. In 3ds max 2014 it is exactly the same size as the original, it is in the hero`s hand, and weighted to the bone "weapon root". But when I import it to the game it is appearing smaller and it`s not in his hand. Please help.
im using 3ds max 2014. http://i.imgur.com/KInzzzU.png in the above picture the scale gizmo (top 2 pictures) displays the functionality i want on the move gizmo (bottom 2 pictures). as you can see it works on the scale but not on move.. any ideas?
If you would model a flat geo strip of that shape and unwrap it, you could use this method aswell: https://simonfuchs.wordpress.com/2014/08/17/tutorial-adding-detail-to-your-highpoly-objects-using-the-slideknit-script/
