Need help with clamshell boulders.
Hey guys, I'm working on some rocks, and I'm pretty stuck as to how to approach this. These rocks are kind of like layerd, clamshelly, striated looking things, and they'll be pretty big. forgive my shitty drawing, hopefully you understand what I'm talking about. Hey ColorMusic, I think you have a nice start here but some of the values are off. For instance, the grassy hill in the foreground and then the large rocks right after it are competing with each other in tone. You need to lighten up the rocks as well as the lower right-hand corner. Separate subtools for separate items. Gonna harp on that. Also, that microdetail on the rock doesn't really sell the rock-surface as rock. It's soft-looking-- Try something like the TrimDynamic brush. I swear by it + the orbs crack brush for both wood and rocks of the more stylised persuasion. You should get something more… -

Great work! I think your rocks are a bit too noisy. I wont dispute that they match the ref, but they seem at odds with the general wet, drippy look you have going.
