well when u get mudbox, they have online documentation and video tutorials about how mudbox can be used for making pillars etc. the stamps and stuff make for good methods of adding detail on non-organic materials.... not that i've ever done enviro pieces with mudbox....

The main problem I see is with tiling modular pieces. Since you paint to the edge of the model piece, it will obviously not tile properly to the other side. Perhaps ZBrush has options to fix this, but Mudbox doesn't (yet). For now, you could turn on mirroring, so that as you paint the edge, it's mirrored to the other side.…
