Are you deleting history or something? Make sure if you need to delete history, use "delete non-deformer history" otherwise you will be deleting your skinCluster nodes too.

I want to delete the history of a head mesh in maya without losing the blend shapes. the reason is I made a few tweaks with regards to the normal smoothing and want to collapse these tweaks I tried delete non deformer history , but it gives out error messages. Is there a work around for this cheers
comparing maya's history to modifiers though, is making history look useful it's horrible in comparison! Maybe I just don't know how to use it properly but most of the time maya's history is junk compared to the flexibility of the modifier stack
