Probably better off using the skylight and global illumination in the post process volume to lighten the shadows, but you can get better results by adjust the light bake settings themselves in the World Settings tab.
The images are rendered with Maya Mental Ray. The scene is basically set up with only one main light from the lightbulb. I also put a bunch of point lights around to fake the global illumination.

Up : my process on that beast is simple , sketching with zspheres , then convert to polymesh to use snakehook for the multiple small branch and global volume. once the volume is final , zremesher give me a real homogeneous quad basemesh to really start detailing . herbergeur d image h
You should be able to use the U and V numbers at top right to move them. nice progress, this scene would be even nicer if you fake some color bleedind from your red curtain. Your global illumination looks weak... The bricks wall is barely noticable due to this, Adding some bloom too will enhance the overall feel and atmosphere.
