I think manually retopo'ing the CAD model will destroy the efficiency of the workflow. You'd be creating a cad model, a model around that so you can have a turbosmoothed model, then a low poly to bake onto. You may as well skip the CAD part since you would be rebuilding your highpoly anyways.

You want it to not cast shadow just onto itself? What about an unlit shader? I think there is no way to disable just the self shadowing. You can disable the shadow casting, but then it won't cast shadows onto anything.

Hey hey, Been futzing about with high poly modeling and when I go to render my am. occ the floating pieces in the highpoly cast shadows. I was told by vahl that this can be disabled by enabling "front face casting" in the mental ray settings. However, I can't find this in Max. (Max 2008). Any ideas?
