I have already said that it's not for game assets. It's for CGI video and certain special effects I wish to add needs this text inset into the helmet. Why I need to do this isn't the question, but how is. (Don't mean to sound like an ass here btw)
i made a mocup retro tile screen for dead space for a small contest and nitewalkr said i should post it here and suggested making a retro shooter its mostly googled images so dont think im good at anything cgi related
Silo/Blender would be a good combination.. Silo is a great modeling package and Blender will handle your mapping/rigging needs. If you're outputting serious CGI renders though - I'd use a third party renderer, at least until Cycles is added to the main trunk.
Ya and it actually comes from the ancient dark past before CGI was widespread. When they were making star wars and wanted general surface detail for their ships or whatever they would slap on parts of model kits in order to populate the surfaces with high-frequency detail..
It doesn't help when you know how to do that too...... I've tried describing this to people who don't play video games at all. Best response was when I said "You know those CGI movies? That's similair to what I do."
