http://s3.postimage.org/kndmlpkd/Arena_Net_Progress_JB.png This is a practice art test I'm doing for a class. I'm not terribly far along, but I wanted to get an idea of whether I was doing things right. Is it typical to have lots of separate elements? Is it better to be one connected element? Oh, and here's the reference…

Clean topology for low poly, can save you a shitload of time when Unwrapping. Bakes usually turn out better. Also the piece you are showing is not that bad. But a lot of useless edges that can be simplified. It's a good practice to make it good. In case another person takes it over to UW or texture it.
Alright, finally finished! There's a lot that can be improved, but this is the first full body figure I've ever made. So, I am going to move on to another model and practice there. All in all, don't think it turned out bad. Learned a lot. The artstation: https://www.artstation.com/artwork/zOn6Gq

I'm shortly wrapping this up and sorting the low poly, after some proportion comparison and refining the forms.I wanted to refine the cloth/anatomical details a bit more before finalizing. I still have a lot of practice to work on cloth, torn fabric and hair :D Cheers all
Thank you for your encouragements =) And yes, you're right. This is one of my greatest weaknesses right now. I've already watch tutorials on the matter but I need to practice more, obviously. I was going to update materials and assets but maybe lighting is more important for the moment ! ^^ Thanks again !
Hey Neil, try making something simple first and make it look really good. I got Janeil to make the fire hydrant, so try making something similar it will help a lot. Try a dumpster. Something that can be made easily and that you can use to practice texturing.
