Sorry, but it doesn't look good overall. Looks like someone sanded the painted metal down. I would consider that wear on the receiver and switch it for defined metal scratches with proper form, right now looks like a soup. edit pic, see how the wear is defined and not all over the place.

texture = skin always made sense to me too, i used to think of it like this: you have a skeleton, the mesh is its muscles that define its form, you put a skin on top of it to define its appearance. that doesn't mean i don't think it's the wrong term to use, but it still made sense.
