You have way too much fine detail modeled into your lowpoly. All the trim, those little buttons etc, let the normal map do its job and represent fine detail. This will make a more efficient asset that is much easier to bake, and will look as good/better(less chance of smoothing errors). It will also result in a uv layout…
Hi, I have an asset I created in Maya and is textured with a trim sheet in Maya. I took the asset in zbrush as well to add some damage and cracks and then tried to bake it on the low poly in substance painter. When I bake in painter, the baking is all over the place. If I go back to Maya and just layout my UV's instead of…
Also it would greatly speed up your baking to use a GPU accelerated baker, like Toolbag https://marmoset.co/toolbag/baking/ or Knald https://www.knaldtech.com/knald/ or Substance https://helpx.adobe.com/substance-3d-bake/features/gpu-raytracing.html. As far as I know Xnormal doesn’t use the GPU, it’s only a CPU baker,…
Hi everyone! I am a 3D Art Student, currently writing my Bachelors Thesis covering the topic of Texture Baking. Thank you for your answers! Yes, probably but I already only used one chain link and the rest are instances and I actually moved their uvs out of the uv space so that they wouldn't interfere. The bars that are too huge though and take up too much space, should I make a different uv map for the bars and put the rest of the…
A few factors that can contribute to this : • Some bakers automatically split the rays at the hard edges of lowpoly models (and require a cage to prevent that) while some don't. The ones who do split rays would require a lowpoly cage to control ray direction accurately. • Besides that, the stair stepping you are seeing is…

Hi guys! I met a problem trying to bake Ambient occlusion from normal map in 3ds max. The source I have is low poly mesh with a normal map baked from highpoly. I have no original highpoly (otherwise, it would be pretty easy to complete). Here are some ways I tried to make it work, such as scanline+skylight, or mental ray,…
