update: solved, kind of. not worth investigating because advanced skeleton actually has a blendshape correction wizard, which if you use, makes it so that this problem isn't a problem. You need to build it in Designer to create those sorts of controls. If you don't want to do that, you could put it at the bottom of your layer stack where it won't affect anything else, do your contrast etc then use an anchor point to slot it in where you need it.
