The minolta 50mm 1.7 is the first lens you should buy, you can pick up a used copy for $75-100 on ebay. This lens is sharp from about F2-5.6 or so whereas teh kit zoom is sharp from about F5.6-F8 or so, which in use means you can use the 50mm in a wide variety of lighting conditions. For compacts with a nice zoom range the Panasonic Lumix's are nice cameras. The have quality Leica lenses, and sharpness is very consistent corner to corner. PaK I'd suggest taking two types of lens if you're using an SLR or digi SLR. Get a wide angle lens and a really decent telescopic. Wide angle for ref shots and the zoom lens for actual texture shots.
