3ds Max - Using Viewport Backgrounds, in need of help

So I've been playing around with the viewport background settings in the 2017 version of max and I can't seem to figure out how to get this to work properly.

I want to have a reference photo in the background, which I can zoom in to and model acordingly to. But whatever I do, I can only get it to be a static background, which I can't zoom into or pan around on. I've looked at the official Autodesk help page, but nothing I could find there seemed to be of any assistance. I watched a video from 2013 where someone did it in max, so it should be possible.
