Yeah, if my memory serves me correctly then Max versions prior to 2008? or 2009 will be better off using the GuruWare obj IO plugin. With Max 2008? or 2009 onwards the plugin is integrated into Max.
Maybe try using a different map size? I know in the June and July betas at least, build lighting is really messed up for maps bigger than 509 x 509. Could be fixed in newer betas, but not sure.

What version of Max? If you are using pre-2009, download the guruware obj exporter for Max (2009 just took or bought it and release it as their obj exporter now, but it is the same thing). That should fix your planar-UV map issue.

Been using my rig at work with Max 2011 and i'll be moving to a new machine next week with 2009. Unfortunately i can't simply save as a 2009 version. What's the best format to save or export my work so as to keep information regarding multi sub objects and such? Help is appreciated!
