i'd go for the intuos3, size depends on personal preference and if it's just for a hobby, can you justify spending another 100 or so for the intuos4? -

I worked on mods, levels, 3D, etc.. always as a hobby and passion but never considered it a viable career path. Until someone offered me a job! -

Stay there, make games in your free time. You'll be able to fund your hobby that way and one day maybe even release some indie game.
