Oh, you might want to try this then: Do 2 renders, one with the min. you can do that still gets all of your base detail, and then a 2nd render thats the max you need to do to get all of your floating details and then just combine them in PS. I've had to do this a couple times.

hi we just got maya 8.5 (woot, massive step up from 6 hah) I was wondering if it has the same kind of projection baking you get in max- so for example if I have several high poly objects floating on a plane, can I render a straight diffuse of how those objects are lit etc onto that plane. Lately i've been having some cases where i could only use turbosmooth on the floating geometry and still get away with the gun looking nice. Whats the turbosmooth mainly being used for? hey guys im trying to attach pockets to a hoody i finished, i know the process and i appear to be doing it correctly, only problem when i run simulate the pocket looks like it's going to attach seamlessly but instead it just floats out of place and hovers over where its suppose to conform...
