Max viewport hasnt got as many features as Maya. Either you need to find a hair shader material or use Activeshade with an Arnold renderer to preview any hair work in Max, The standard viewport renderer is pretty bad and it hasnt got Arnold IPR like Maya, Or decent quality shadows, Or RTGI. How did you do it ? Have just downloaded and installed Arnold 2.3.37 for MAx2019 . Besides baking surface shading It bakes few weird artifacts and nothing more. From what I saw I am not even sure Arnold is fully capable of baking. That Arnold have always seemed to me even bigger pain in the a.. than Mental Ray ever was .… -

yuo can do it with arnold and eevee( see attached), so I a guessing it's not that hard to implement. I can't make it work properly with light path node, comes out a bit weird looking, though it does kind of work With Cycles lights you can add nodes and do some quite creative stuff.
