you can control transparency in the surface shader, you should also do a search for mix8 layers. there are a few layer node shader floating around. -

I'm not saying it isn't important or isn't interesting, but viewing it creatively it is very limited. There are not a lot of ideas floating around beyond religious idolatry and pure technique. -

Floating planes, decals, animated UV's, flipbook, etc, there are countless ways which all depend on the engine and what are the option available to achieve said effect. -
