In maya I use Roadkill, shame it's not being actively developed anymore. It's straighten-unwrap is fantastic for easy to manage UV's. Unfold3D looks like a real contender to UVLayout, going to check it out soon: http://www.polygonal-design.fr/e_unfold/index.php
In lack of money I just use Blender, I've heard great things about UVlayout but I think Blender's UV tools are pretty good, you just gotta have some basic unwrapping knowledge and you'll be able to produce good UV layouts quick and easy.
If you guys haven't tried it yet I've been doing most of my unwrapping in 3DCoat lately with minimal fixes in Maya. Not quite sure how well it works on hard surface stuff but for organic stuff I love it.
