Why not just use middle mouse and alt-middle mouse to pan/zoom, then the scroll wheel to zoom? I can understand (sorta) if your using a mouse which is awkward to click the middle button, but if thats the case, i'd give another mouse like the logitech anywhere mx mouse a try, setting very easy to press button right behind… -

It really depends on what you do with your time and where you are at artistically. As well as how much time you have to dedicate to it.
