Did you know that even a low end PC will have relatively more than double the RAM available than say, the 360 and PS3? I really wouldn't put any effort into rendering 360's of realtime art with Mental Ray. Like Vig said, use Animation > Make Preview. I've been doing that all week at work to create our showreel, works perfectly. You can even get masks from it if you set the background to black and use a pure white shader.
1024x1024 is no longer the largest you'll see in games. The Xbox 360 had 512mb of ram, and most textures were around 512x512 or smaller. Now consoles have 8 gigs of ram, so 2048x2048, or multiple 1024x1024 textures for a model is possible. 40k tris for characters in "next gen" games seems to be common. Art tests normally…
