His blending node is set to subtract and the opacity is set to 0.51, while yours is set to multiply and 1.

You could do it with booleans with the options set so that it will only cut in edges instead of adding or subtracting.

Instead of those expensive functions, you could simply subtract the noise from the mask for better effect.

What about RTT? do screenspace capture of the plane's normals, subtract blue and use it aas the input.

This is a pretty decent work around... It only allows for subtractive changes, but it does help a bit. Thanks for the tip:)

hold Ctrl while you are adding that object, and when you hold ctrl+square to dynamesh it will do the subtract effect.

Are you actually working subtractive from a block? Is it 3dcoat? It seems like zbrush would have a really hard time with that.
