At the moment, it's all realistic. I'm currently inspired by this person's work. While I'm not aiming to create something 100% like his, I greatly admire how much control he has over his scene's values (and you can see I even asked him a question about his method).
for weapons, I find the very best resource is auction websites. they take such detailed, huge photos in many angles showing all the parts. some even talk about the function. I haven't tried auction sites for other things, but I imagine there are many types of objects to be found on such sites.

Excellent, I have fixed it now. I am viewing the shader in RenderMonkey and it seems that the default cube model it comes with has its UVs layed out as a cross shape.
