I can't convert a polygonal mesh to a subdivision surface due to an error which the polyToSubdiv failed. I read it has to do with nodes for the mesh being tangled, and the solution is to export the object as an OBJ then import the mesh. That's not pointless. Smoothing errors are an obvious sign that someone is new at sub-d modeling. The model looks good aside from the errors that have been pointed out. These are much more subtle than that, if it was just that it would be universally fucked with errors everywhere and very easy to spot. I also wanted to point out it allows you to add and remove geometry from the low poly model without causing shading errors errors as long as the uv map stays the same. This can be used to reduce distortion and skewing you sometimes get from not having enough geometry on some models. -

Ah, well, I cloned it a few minutes ago, and the issue doesn't exist with the cloned version, and so that is definitely a good temporary fix. Still, I'd like to know what the deal is, haha. Low poly vert normals are meaningful, that's why they are called tangent space normal maps, the surface normals of the model directly effect the bake. Artists mostly use cages to avoid projection errors, such as skewing from projection errors or preventing the baker from looking at an overlapping piece of geometry instead… -

unfortunately no. Not too many digital artist anywhere close to me :( EDIT: This error is actually new to me. The one that keeps persisting is the one where Wacom exerts maximum pressure at random points when making lots of brush strokes. Although this error happens at the same time every time that one occurs. -

Looks like a typical smooth-groups error to me. Assuming you work in the 3dsmax, you should select all the faces and use the auto setting to get rid of that. I have noticed that setting all the faces to one smooth group can give you this kind of errors. I hope that helps :)
