Selecting the faces you want to apply the material to, and dragging the material over to the selected faces/assigning the material to the selection would also do the same thing. It automatically groups those selected faces under the same material ID :)

hey there. i want to hide an element under "edit poly" so i choose the "hide selected" button. after "unhide all" the hidden element isn't selectable as vertex anymore. thanks.
I would like to select a model, than click a button and have it select all the faces on the model that do not have materials assigned to them. Anyone written this yet?
Im in biped skinning a character, wondering if theres a similar function to the one in Blender where selecting a vertex of a mesh then hitting CTRL+L selects the entire object.
Right I found it... For ending the christmas mode : - Empty current selection - Ctrl + Shift +RMB - ---> Marking Menu : "Select" - ---> Pre- selection Highlight ...........................
Another really nice way to get selections like that is to use a 'vol select' modifier. Set it to faces and anything within its gizmos will be selected.
