I just tried to assign a few custom hotkeys in maya but when i close and reopen the application, the custom hotkeys are not there anymore. Maya reverts back to its default. I am using student version 2015 in ubuntu. everything else works fine.

Substance painter is currently ( 16-6-2015 at 13:12 +1 Berlin time) on sale for 40% off. is it worth it? I've checked the features and it looks like an excellent tool for texturing my characters and further utilizing PBR textures. any thoughts?

Shader FX was added to Max 2015. I suggest you upgrade and use it to build your own shaders. It looks tough at the start, but if you start simple it's really pretty easy to build it up to an awesome shader.
