When the object floats far away from the character, does it still appear to be attached to the bone? I have no experience with compiling with Maya or Blender, but I know that this is a problem in 3DSMAX when compiling that deals with the object's pivot/hierarchy. I would try resetting the X-forms via the utilities tab and collapsing. You've got different pivot information coming out of the export so my guess would be "obj doesn't give a rats ass and will take it like it is" whereas "FBX is looking a little deeper and your pivot isn't where you think it is" -

I guess you export the cgfs out of the editor as obj? If so, you dont get the object pivot - its a major pain in the ass and hopefully get changed in the future. Our pivots are mostly in the middle of the object. And you are right, we dont have so much modular stuff - in C3 its alot of unique pieces. -

One problem with attaching is that you lose the individual pivot positions/orientations. You can easily re-center them after exploding, but it's a pain if they need to be in particular places for animation or physics or whatever. Here's the script I mentioned. I think it might preserve pivots, dunno haven't used it.… -

press p to set pivot when what you want to rotate around is centered or click the set pivot button the right hand side, it is located under the local transformation button.. ***edit actually you dont even have to cent the object.. just press it when everything but what you want to rotate around is centered.. -

A little workflow treasure in max which not many people are aware of!
A great tool that max has.. and not many people use it.. in fact i bet many think it's pointless and useless :) so they never noticed that it is now slightly broken but still very much usable and in exactly the same way. It takes a few extra words to explain how and why use this instead of WP, but it is much easier to use… -
