Does anyone know of a way to select all connected polys with the same material ID or smoothing group? Would be a pretty cool scripts I reckon. I'd attempt to script it myself but that's way beyond my limited scripting skills. Maybe one of the Maxscript wizards out there can have a go at it?
[ QUOTE ] actually, i've found a mirroring script that works pretty well =D http://www.juantwo.com/scripts.htm hes got some pretty useful scripts actually... [/ QUOTE ] ...nice one - always useful. thank You and thanks to Juan for this script.
scripts more scripts, you can do anything with scripts but autodesk can't do anything on its own. Did 2010 even add ANYTHING? Perfect file compatibility with older versions of maya makes me question whether these things are actually being updated at all.
I daisy chained some commands together into a script that MIGHT help with automate the manual process a bit. It isn't anything too complex and there might be better, more advanced ways to generate the needed topology but this should get close to the same results you're getting manually. When executed it does the following:…
You could use the attribute spreadsheet to do this but the easiest way is to create a script that does this. I was feeling generous so I wrote a quick script for you and put it here: https://www.artstation.com/dankeating/blog/dKOZ/quick-script-for-changing-smoothing-values-across-multiple-objects
Make sure the UV shell edges are hardened on both. I use this script all the time: http://jonathonstewart.blogspot.co.uk/2012/10/script-harden-edges-of-all-uv-borders.html Apply that script to both meshes, then rebake and see how it turns out :)

Whats wrong with the script you linked? I find it much better than anything in the ribbon and the spherify method and I use it all the time. The script says max9 and above so if your running a version of max with the ribbon then you are able to run this script...
It looks the normals might be flipped. There's a good 3Ds Max script for this: http://mixescript.blogspot.com/2013/03/fix-meshes.html -Max, scripting, new script -Ctrl+A to select all -Ctrl+e key to apply You can also select those faces in Maya and use Mesh Display -> reverse.
