I think this is where figure drawing practice from life comes in handy. It forces you to translate the proportions of the model onto your page by observation. I wouldn't worry about making it "right" the first time either. With your first programs you'll be happy when they run at all and you see some results. Yeah I hate to sound harsh, but I am also learning that you really just have to practice all the time with painting to be able to get your textures how you want them.
