can you show us the actual nomral map? that might help with the troubleshoot. Also Make sure your low poly has all edges smoothed during the bake so the normal doesn't try to compensate for hard angles. Normals and rotation
Never seemed to have this issue before or maybe I just never noticed it. I have a simple 8 sided hose that I want to slap normal map on so I get a little more interest out of it. It looks fine when the hose is running vertically but when it bends horizontally the normal map becomes so slight and it just looks like crap.… -

normal map problem
When I view my model with an object space normal map it looks fine, but when I use a tangent space normal map you can see all of the separate faces. It also doesn't happen to the entire model, but is most apparent at the top and bottom, and then fades out towards the middle... it looks like a smoothing groups problem but… -
Normal maps and rendering
So, stoof is trying to render out an ambient occlusion map for a model. I have created parts of the model in max in a higher poly version(adding plates and rivets and bolts. that sorta mess.) and i have a bunch of things ive done in photoshop for additional normal information. Bake your normals to UV channel 1 (it's the only UV channel that normals will look correct in UE3) then in your material just tile the texture coordinates of your tiling normal. To combine them in the material multiply the tiling normal by 1,1,0 and add it to your macro normal. It's not super accurate but it works. -

While I agree in very general terms that painting normals like this isn't really a workflow that I would suggest people do, he does bring up a few valid points. Generating a bump map from a height map will never match as accurately as a hand painted… -

I dont get it, whats the problem?, the details you claim to not exist are in your high-poly. [Edit] ah, I thought you meant the high frequency details, not the tangent gradients.
