Hey, archie. I just take a screenshot in maya with the background set to pure green to easily select it and delete. Then ill either lasso select the item or take another screenshot of just the item to have two separate images. Then i just desaturate one of them in Photoshop. + simple radial gradient.
This is awesome news, I'm really excited to see what items get picked as I think this is really going to drive how the style of future items develops. I've been working on some ideas so can't wait to have a place to discuss them! Also that helmet is hilarious. Cheers guys!

Well bro,i have created a ton of items and i am always stuck in this point,right before retopo.. I did not spend much time on this item,cuz i did it just for practicing. If i manage to retopo properly i will give in a better shot,but i can't :(

A small update this weekend. I implemented repair kits (health potions). They are pickups that get used immediately. I will make them as inventory items too later. The vast majority of the large stuff is already modeled as you can see in the gif however textures need to be done and some items will need to be modeled.
