In addition to what Chris mentioned, be thinking about the grid as well. If your objects are modeled in standard dimensions and on a grid, they will be much easier to snap together in engine (or a 3d package).

Grid lines should be at every 2 pixels, and subdivisions should also be set to 2, not 1. (or you can use the pixel grid if you've got gpu accel. running)
Environment modeling is all about the grid. And imo Modo has a nicer setup for the grid then Max or Maya. That said, Max and Maya are industry standards, so learn both. lulz.
