Hey Quack, nice work so far! How long did you model? This Mesh remembers me a bit of LoneWolfs Transformer Robot :) https://yaron-levi.squarespace.com/transformers-grimlock/ Keep it up! :)
fwiw .. Maya's transform display is equivalent to setting Max's to "Parent" it's probably also worth mentioning that in max you don't need to freeze transforms every third click because it handles everything for you
"The transformation was painful. We paid the price" Crytek boss Cevat Yerli on unpaid wages, Ryse 2 and the future. http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2014-08-08-the-transformation-was-painful-we-paid-the-price
For pivot snapping, you have to make your pivot visible. With your object selected: Display -> Transform Display -> Rotate Pivots, or check "Display Rotate Pivot" under the transform tab in the Attribute Editor.
I meant the "transformation 2d" node. Or the "material transform" node. But I agree with poopipe - it sounds like you need to arrange your workflow in a more flexible way. The point of a material library is that it shouldn't contain any data that is locked to a specific mesh. It should just be 'concrete' not 'curbing'.
It is possible to make a blendshape not transform linearly, but instead attach it to a curve which it transforms along or something? Maybe a blendshape could be combined with a deformer to get the effect? I'm trying to simulate flower petals opening, but the linear transition isn't very great for it.
If you move your curve to the origin, you will see it still has transforms on it ie: its pivot is not at 0,0,0 so when the cube is the child and has zeroed out transforms that position is not where the pivot of the curve is.
With the presence of the freeform transform tool I don't really see any reason to use the individual move, rotate, or scale tools. I've been using the freeform transform tool exclusively my entire career.
Maybe this is not related, but this happened to me too; however, this happens only if I forget to remove transformations in 3ds max. After I remove transformations that issue disappears. 8 gigs of ram, 2 gigs on GPU
You can snap to visible pivots. To display pivots: Display-> transform Display ->Rotate Pivots to toggle on and off the pivot of selected objects. Or in the Attr Editor of the transform node under Pivots->Display Rotate Pivot
