Look at the darkened subtool: If polypaint is turned on, try turning it off and, making sure your selected colour (right hand side) is not black, see if that fixes the problem. If not, check it isn't the material that has changed. If it's polypainted / new material, turn MRGB on and select the colour / material you want… -

for max when I did use it, i'd say the whole workflow pissed me off. with maya when I used it I found it overly complicated some things. somethings were fine, but other items were overly complicated and was easy to get confused. -
