Your lowpoly should also be as close as possible to the surface of the high, not bigger, not smaller. Match it as accurately as possible. Then, the issue is your ray distance or cage size. renderbump just casts rays from the lowpoly mesh to a maximum range defined by the trace fraction. "-trace 0.1" means that it will cast rays to 10% of the size of the object. So if you have a box which is 64 units in all axes then it will cast rays out to 6.4 units from the lowpoly surface. It doesn't use a "cage" at all. -

Now that Mental Ray has gone away and Arnold does not bake to vertices, SX Tool has been updated with its own occlusion renderer. The quality is similar to Mental Ray, and speed is (multiple times!) faster with low-poly objects. Once the poly counts get higher, Mental Ray gains the lead thanks to its multi-threading. -

A more simple explanation may be your seeing alot of gritty textures because your playing gritty styled games... Artist A wants to work for studios B,C and D.
