You have symmetry on. Go to the menu at the top of the interface, choose transform. You will see Activate Symmetry in the drop down palet. Turn off all the axis buttons. You should be good to go. :) You are pressing the hotkeys by accident while you are modelling.

The 3D stuff in CS4 Extended isn't really there yet, interface and performance wise. Also you might want to consider getting an older version as CS4 is generally quite slow to work with (and had issues with Nv dual view last time I checked).
look for "Rotate CCW" or "Rotate CW" in Customise > customise user interface > keyboard . It rotates the object by 45 degrees perpendicular to the current view. So in top view it rotates about the Z axis. In user view it depends on what angle you're looking at the object.
That's kinda what I was thinking, Rick! It's all a tad overwrought ... glowy bits on a dark background are all well and good, but personally I prefer a slightly cleaner and more recognisable interface Thanks for the links anyway though, I'm sure someone will enjoy them!

it seems like I cant get max to accept my changes in the UI. when I look in the customize user interface menu all of my changes are there but they are not applied or something. Its just silly that im wrestling with this instead of actually doing any work, help!
hi there! I recently switched to maya 2016... and surprise surprise... I cant seem to use my "user_hotkeys.mel" from maya 2015... in this new version, as they ve changed the interface and it asks for a .mkh file... any ideas, solutions will be appreciated... merci
