The round_corners shader in mental ray can mask the intersections between the rocks so you don't necessarily have to join multiple rocks together on the base mesh. It really depends on what sort of rock formation you're trying to make. Do you have some reference images that you're working from? There are many different types of stone with all manner of different shapes and surface types. It's difficult to point to a particular part of a sculpt and say "this doesn't look right"… -

Hey, it looks like a good attempt but still too blobby to be rocks. The main thing I notice is it looks like you used the move tool and pulled those areas out, as a result loosing a lot of mesh density in these areas. Therefore, to me it just screams CG (not a good thing). I am also guessing you started with a plane right?… -
