Ok so with the fall of hd-dvd and already owning a 360 I went ahead and picked up a PS3.
Figured I have netflix they do blu ray. Work has a huge game library to check things out so why not. Picked up the console, extra controller and remote for dvd and also picked up Ratched and Clank Future.
Get home unpack. What the fuck. It comes with a standard composite cable? Not even component. WOW. Ok I was gonna pick up HDMI anyways but I was gonna wait till Monday when I grab my new tv.
So yeah playing on fucking 480i didn't really interest me so I decided to just download some demoes, set the console up to share with my networked files, etc.
Why on earth does it take so long to download something? I can download a 1.2 gig file on the 360 pretty quickly but it took like 3 hours on the PS3. Is that normally like that?
I have a very fast net connection so I know it wasn't me.
So I can't make any judgements on the graphics just yet or any game play on anything new so I'll wait until thats all hooked up on Monday to let you all know.
Another thing. Sony boasts about how the console is hd ready out of the box but it doesn't have any cables that support hd in the box. My original 360 had component and my new elite has dvi. So what givs with that?
Also where are the 1080p games for PS3? Rock Band is 1080p on 360 and it's only 720p on the PS3. My guess is the wonderful constraints we as devs have to deal with on the ps3 and this is the cut back.

As for the 'peoples info', i suggest bugging the mods to start up a ps3 network tag thread much like the xbox live thread over in the Archives section.
Personally my biggest beef with the playstation 2 and now 3 has been the controllers. As someone that has bigger hands, the playstation controllers have always felt weak and breakable to me. Plus I don't like the analog placement much either.
I'll instantly pick up a 60gb if I see one since there's some ps2 games i'd like to play otherwise i'll wait for this new rumor 120gb version with the rumble returned.
So when I got the PS3 my HD set up was ready to go.
My download speed off the PS Network seems comparable to XBL. *shrug* I always just que up downloads anyways then go off and watch TV.
A majority of PS3 games are 1080p. Sony is reall keen on having its developers make their games at 1080p resolution.
It should say on the back of the box what resolution the game is displayed in.

The PS3 is pretty robust. It does more past just playing games. There's the obvious blu-ray player built in (requires HDMI cable to play movies, though). It's upscaling capabilities of DVDs to higher resolutions is pretty good as well. The lastest update to the OS allows for DivX and WMV. So you can burn movies/porno onto a CD/DVD, pop it in the PS3 and watch in either the native resolution of the movie or upscaled. If you have the HDD space you can copy files off the disc.
The way it interacts with the PSP is quite cool, too. Apart from freely transfering files between the 2, the PSP can remotely access your PS3. Let's say you installed a larger HDD into your PS3 and then loaded it up with movies and music. You can use your PSP to access that library of entertainment and view/listen to them on your PSP. A guy at work watches movies on his PSP at work off his PS3 at home.
Built in web browser is fun to mess with. But really pretty useless. Only really useful for PS3 related downloads.
PSN is pretty cool with their release of older classic PS1 games. You can either play them on your PS3, or play them on your PSP. Games range frome $5 - $10.
I don't have many games for it, though. Since, honestly, there's almost nothing out there worth picking up. I bought the PS3 to play the Japanese version of Gran Turismo Prologue. Forgot to mention, that yeah, the PS3 is region free. Imported games play instantly. Then I picked up Devil May Cry 4. I borrowed Ratchet and Clank from work but haven't played it in a while.
Installing the games is pretty lame. And a bit odd for a console. They do take up A LOT of space. Gran Turismo currently takes up some 5GB, Devil May Cry takes up about 4GB, and Ratchet and Clank some 800megs. WTF??
For a little while I sort of regreted not picking up the 80GB version (has backwards compatibility, though emulated, plus a few other extras). But I haven't really been finding myself having a need for the extra space or extra functions. At the moment I use the PS3 to play games and watch movies.
Oh... if you haven't opened the remote... return it! The controller works fine for controling movies.
The image quality of things displayed in 1080p is crazy. It's fun watching blu-ray movies and being able to spot make up on actors, CG effects, and unbelievably lame props. Everything is so much clearer that all of the above becomes so much easier to spot. For movies it kinda goes both ways. It's great being able to see a much clearer picture. But at the same time you kind of get taken away from the immersion because of visual flaws are so easily seen.
Games look pretty good in general at higher resolutions.

No complaints. It's appears the console was built as a perfect companion to my 40" bravia.
I prefer that the controllers charge over usb. The data storage seems so much more "tidy" compared to the xbox, the trailer park for 1080p titles is nice, but hate the web interface.
The web browser is shit, always crashes for me, so I don't use it, no big loss.
Strangely enough downloading demos here in Japan is freaking fast. 1 gb or so in the time it takes to go and make a cup of tea and watch something else briefly. As is mentioned, just stack them up.
When I first got it, I was brushing back the tears of happiness even playing shit titles like ridge racer, because 1080p gaming is close to euphoria, wears off though

Overall I'm happy with my purchase. Playing old ps2 games doesn't matter to me as I have a ps2 for those if I wanted to, but since I don't play any old 360 games I don't intend on playing on ps2 games.
Controller is so light and tiny in my ape hands that I feel like if I pulled just right I would rip it in half.

Agreed, its fun but short and no replay value. The cinematics and gameplay make it better than some movies in the acting and character development department though...
...other times you will be annoyed. Like with hats...and gongs. Also, in most games, its best to turn off the motion sensing whatever it is and just use the sticks or the d-pad...cause motion sensing sucks.

Keg: I think they only have 2 models available for the PS3 these days. 60GB or 80GB. 20GB and 40GB versions have been discontinued. I was trying to find the 20GB ones for the hardware backwards compatibility... but no dice.
The 120GB is just a rumour at this stage? Might hang for a bit to see where this goes, because I did a similar thing with my 360. Picked one up, then about a month later they announced the elite. I don't even have one with the HMDI port either

Hawkens right, recharging the controller via the USB cable is fucking awesome. I absolutely hate that I had to BUY the "controller to system" cable for my 360 just so I could recharge my controller.

It is frustrating, but it's just as frustrating that the PS3 comes with no HD cables whatsoever. The cheapest HDMI cable you can find in a brick & mortar store is around $20 or $30 which is more than a charge cable for the 360 controller.

So because I am inpatient I am off to grab an hdmi cable from Target. They had one for like 25 bucks. So I'll pay a little extra for convenience.
If generic HDMI cables are so cheap why can't Sony include them in the box?

I have Uncharted but have yet to play it. Other than that, I played the toy car demo, I like that one.
I buy my games on the 360. Much more my style.

Besides the lack of hd cables in the box I am quite happy with my purchase. Overall a lot of fun so far.
I'll probably upgrade the hard drive later on.

i was really hating on sony in the beginning, and i still dont think i would have a ps3 if work didn't get us all one, but i like mine, at the moment its really just a fancy movie player for me, i do like psn though, love sotn.. *** after some actual reasearch microsoft does have some dedicated servers, just some games dont, also seems to be a common misconception.**
i hear resistance 1 has good multiplayer, i don't know never played it, hahha. been meaning to get around to it, but after looking at it all day at work, last thing i want to do is look at it when i get home.
