teh Musac. polycounters and their music

1
hey guys, just wanted to get to know the people better with another one of my random general discussion posts.

what type of music do you guys listen to as you work? i dunno why i wanna know... like i said, random question grin.gif

anyways... i listen to hip-hop, though, of late, its become more techno [david guetta, joachim garraud etc. etc.]. i guess the beats get me more 'pumped' to work in a sense.

Hmm, I'm perdy sure there's been threads like this several times before. But meh, another can't hurt. smile.gif

Metal, mostly. Also some classical/orchestral as well as other random shit thrown in here and there. Typically nothing with distracting lyrics or anything.

For conceptual work I find instrumental hip-hop and psy-trance work best. cool.gif They're engaging without being too distracting and pretty open to interpreting into whatever I'm working on. Once I'm down to the raw labor of modeling/texturing/rigging, anything goes.

Yeah, it can really range. Although if I'm really into what I'm working on, I like to listen to music I can ignore, and also blends well on a loop.

But lately I've been listening to the Smashing Pumpkins, The Knife and Run Level Zero.

metal or old rock mostly. I used to have a 30 minute clip of static and sound garbage that I listen to at work once in a bit. Its actually pretty calming like listening to water drip on a stupid water fall type sound.

my office is right next to the sound dept so I'm forced to hear random sound fx all day as well.

Recently, I've been listening to The Dear Hunter mostly, with some Acroma and Biffy Clyro thrown in there.

Also got a few stations that I flick between on Pandora (Opeth, Porcupine Tree, Tool, The Dear Hunter) to find new bands I might like.

http://www.last.fm/user/moppius <- that's a little out of date since I forgot to install the Winamp plugin when I rebuilt my computer last month. Also, I need to find a way of getting the tracks I play on my iPod onto last.fm, since mostly that's what I listen to at work.

I don't usually listen to music while working on something unless there is some distracing noise outside. I'll buy a noise canceling headphone set if they get a little less expensive someday.

What I listen is mostly metal(Meshuggah, Fear Factory, Symphony X, Metallica(old stuff of theirs) etc.), movie/anime/game soundtracks(Spirited Away, God of War(awesome!), Gran Turismo, MGS series, Metal Slug series), some smooth jazz(Acoustic Alchemy), some fusion(Liquid Tension Experiment, Gordian Knot, Quartet Muartet) and some classical stuff.

My music library remains within the Rock to Metal. The bands range from Anthrax (where my handle and avatar come from), Korn, Clutch, and Kid Rock, to Bob Seger, Tom Petty, and Boston.

JesseMoody: Good to see someone else mention Anthrax. It's a band that it seems no one ever knows.

I actually stopped listening to music.

When I first started in the industry, I listened to music non-stop. Then... I kinda just got burned out with my collection and the current trends.

So now I just play dvds for ambient sound.

Wow. First time I've ever heard of anybody mention that band in the real world. My friend got me hooked on them in '98 because his brother was in the band. smile.gif

As for me - Mostly downtempo and more ambient stuff these days. UNKLE, Apparat, DNTEL, Tristeza, Boards of Canada, Explosions in the Sky, Yume Bitsu, and the album that I currently can NOT stop listening to: Bodi Bill.

heavy stuff. Fast stuff, hard beats, fast wailing guitars, complex music. Keeps my brain working. Will also mellow out to some things too.

heavy: Slayer, Daath, Cradle of Filth, Behemoth, pantera, meshuggah (though they are a little *too* much sometimes), Children of Bodom, Lamb of God, Nile, pigdestroyer, Origin, stuck mojo, system of a down,... etc etc etc etc, lots to list.

Chill: deftones, bjork, amorphis, apex theory, alice, GnR, Oysterhead, Teamsleep, type-o etc etc..

classical: Tchaikovsky, Bach (mostly sonatas & violin solos), Brahms, Bruch, mostly violin and brass stuff for me. horns will melt your brain, so good.

At work I listen to podcasts. Once I get my little iPod knockoff (it's in the mail!) I'll be listening to a variety of music, definitely lots of rock, as well as game music and opera, I find ambient music with no vocals a great accent to my work.

I listen to a lot of stuff, though it's typically alt-rock, funk-rock, etc. I'll occasionally throw on one of Mitch Hedberg's (God bless) routines, though. He was a very funny man.

Red Hot Chili Peppers, Modest Mouse, They Might Be Giants, The White Stripes, Rancid, The Shins, and U2 all currently top my playlist. Good stuff.

I'm a big audiobook fan too, do you guys have any audio book recommendations?

So far my favorites have been A Song of Ice and Fire by GRRM, the Harry Potter series, and the John Corry detective novels. I've also listened to some other series like A Saga of Seven Suns & A Wheel of Time (though I admit I haven't finished that one yet).

Any other long series that are good (with a good reader)?

I tried listening to Dredg a few years ago, but I just couldn't get into them. I think mainly because it took me so long to actually find anything and when I finally did, it wasn't actually worth the effort. Might give it another go though.
    Currently listening to Internal Affairs.
