    I just saw it.

I wanted to love it. I *really* wanted to love it. Visually, it was great, but my mind kept wandering.

and to arsh: That main theme is an old song by Nine Inch Nails. :P

Am I the only one that thinks that the film was a bit gay-pron ish with all those slo-mo shots of rippling muscles as the hero, clad only in leather liberally seeped in body oil throws him self at another set of pecs. Then there is the averson therapy of seeing a long sharp spear vilently thrust through the inexperienced persians midriff again and again and again and again, untill a healthy sweat starts to drip down the glutimus maximus and the (Spoiler here so deont read) <font color="blue"> final money shot spilling of blood. </font>
Otherwise it was a great film albeit a little gratiously and sometimes eveven tediously violent with suitibly little story to detract from the theam.

If you find corruption in polotics it should be permissable to mention it, how come you shouldn't mention that all the MEN were exceptionally naked concidering your average spartan and that there was an awful lot of pec shots, there was definatly a lot of male sexuality going on in the whole art direction and cinimatography of that film. Sorry if homosexuality offends you, it doesnt me, and it happens to be one of the more historically correct aspects of the film.

Personally I think the homo erotic undertone is present. Present enough to require the need to throw in the 'Athenians are teh gay' jibes so as not to alienate the film from too wide an audience. i.e mid western frat boys can see the movie without fear of ridicule.

I thought it was pretty awesome. Very nice style and cool designs (although the hunchback's costume was terrible for someone who was in a lot of closeup shots).
I'll definitely buy this when it comes out on DVD, if just for the muscle ref smile.gif

I think everyone is taking this film a little too seriously. It's a ridiculously over-the-top action film with tons of awesome art direction and style. The end. I doubt Snyder was expecting any nod from the academy or the history channel. If you are entertained by an hour and a half of ridiculously awesome art and style then it was worth the 10 bucks.

I was just commenting on how hilariously over the top your interpretation of the battle scenes were. Personally I don't consider the movie to have homo erotic undertones, the actors trained and were set up to visually look akin to Greek gods.

Wow, I don't get that homo vibe at all. In fact, I'd say that Leonidas in this film is the absolute personification of manly virtues. He does what he wants despite what the prophets command, he m4d sexorzs his hot wife, he refuses to submit to another man's will, he destroys those who oppose him directly and he dies horribly just so he can make the other fucker bleed. I see "all those slo-mo shots of rippling muscles" and it doesn't make me think about sucking anyone's dick; it makes me think about going to the gym. I admire the strength and discipline it took the actors to achieve that, to say nothing of what real spartan lifestyle was like.

This is an obvious retort, and I don't mean it to antagonize, but I wonder what it says when someone watches this movie and observes a "homo erotic undertone" while that vibe was completely over my head. I think it's hilarious that any guy watches this movie and thinks about giant, metaphorical thrusting penises; to paraphrase Freud, sometimes a spear is just a spear smile.gif

yeah I agree I just got back from the movie, really enjoyed it. And I didn't see any gay undertones at all. The scene with the god king whatever his name is is REALLY reaching if anyone tries to say that was gay. Anyone who gets a gay vibe from the spartans just think of it like this. They are a comic book come to life of course they are gonna be ripped. Also in the story they train constantly for battle so theres another reason they're so ripped. Suck it up.

I got FAR MORE of a gay vibe from Lord of the Rings and the dancing, giggling, gazing longingly into each others eyes hobbits.

what the fuck is this shit?

I must look up the opposite of the word resonant, that would be the most useful thing in describing this film. It was totally unengaging on any level, impossible to get into because there was simply nothing there. Empty, empty, empty, devoid of anything remotely interesting except the fact it looked quite nice i suppose, and the faitful adaptation of the source material. But even that's a failing in the film - it's happy to indulge in sledgehammer emotional clich

High action, boner-giving visuals and slow-mo titty bouncing, fuck off with your needs for depth in a movie like this**

**danr this isn't specifically aimed at you - just bad timing of me saying it and your post being right above it.

It's to those who're ripping this movie apart for its lack of this or that. It was an action movie for fuck sakes, check your brain at the door and get on with it. I got from the movie exactly what I thought I would - you guys seemed to have been expecting the most indepth movie you've ever watched? Matabus' latest reply in this thread nailed it this movie right on its head.

I apologize for being rude but seriously, wtf?

Having seen this last night, I loved it. It felt God of War-ish, and reminiscent of Gladiator. The failing in that comparison is the emotional connection at the end, which is similar in each film yet not as gripping.

I didn't really think there was much in the way of homo erotica, perhaps you could interpret it that way but I saw it as historical/artistic choices (ripped bodies and slow mo respectively). The sex scene at the start with the Queen was a bit unnecessary though, felt uncomfortable and overly long. I've gotta say though, I couldn't take my eyes off their bodies at times because it was such great reference material!

it wasnt bad...but i felt like it's script was aimed at 7-year olds. Sure there was blood and boobs and stuff, but still, that's what it seemed to me. After I saw TMNT this last weekend I realized that even THAT script treated me like I was older.

It is well known that often times when you go to a movie expecting something, your feelings about it are just the opposite when you walk out of a movie. Don't be upset because it didn't live up to your unrealistic expectations. People need to relax and be entertained, not go there and take notes. No, this movie was NOT children of men, it was NOT the departed. It was 300. They're different movies, so stop expecting the same things. It was optional, and you went to see an action film. Don't complain.

i didnt really go to see an action film. i went to see a film based on an awesome graphic novel, if i knew that it was in fact not based on an awesome graphic novel and instead based on a pile of steaming crap i would not have gone and seen it.

if the art direction was consistently awesome throughout the film then it would of gave me something, but the truth is it was only good in parts, the cgi wolf was horrible, the hunchback dude looked like crap, but at the same time, the fat dude with the blade arms looked awesome, and some other stuff looked cool too, but its far from a complete package. i have no problem leaving my brain at the door to enjoy a film, but there was nothing here even for my brainless body, a very empty unenjoyable movie, sorry just my take, but like everything else here if you don't agree with the majority you should just probably not even comment on the topic or someone will start their hate campaign on your mom so i will just leave it at, "i dont like this movie"

    Wow.

Debates on politics, religion or 3D apps dont seem to generate as much defensiveness as a movie topic on these boards these days.

It never ceases to utterly astound me how people can't simply accept a difference of opinion. Gay vibe, or no gay vibe. Awesome, or shit. Different opinions see? Why waste time passionately defending something that someone has already expressed a disliking for. Is there a hope to change their minds or what? Live and let live!

i enjoyed the movie when i saw it opening weekend. agree about the hunchback makeup though. i also thought that the politicians where yelling 'treasure!' at the end showing they were as corrupt as Theron(?).

it's got some nice shots. thankfully dialogue wasn't as terribly overacted as the trailers made it look like. still not good but half-screamed comic book lines don't work for me as movie dialogue.
in battle, i felt it lacked the sense of scale that i would have expected and those boss-creatures didn't do it for me, especially not the cheesy fat man with blade-arms, wtf. is that a doom3-hommage or something?

the side-story was pointless but at least the awesome queen got more screentime this way. apart from xerxes' scenes, where are the homo erotic things to be found, again?

anyway, it wasn't great but didn't make me claim my money back either. hopefully, the slomo techniques they used won't be the next bullet-time-effect for movies to come.

i'm pretty sure most people don't want to be lectured on how to watch or appreciate a film that they've paid money to see. I mean, i could sit here until the cows come home and post a stack of lectures on how the "leave your brain at the door and stop complaining" mentality has bred a whole legion of ugly puppy-like mongoloids, pawing at their masters leg for a taste of whatever shitty leftover cultural morsel he can be arsed to throw down into their dumbfuck drooling chops after he's sucked it dry of all charm and invention, and in it's own way leading most of modern civilisation to the edge of a communal boredom and distress that's one day going to tip us over into total destruction. But, hey, it's just a chat about a film, y'know?

while we're about it though ... if this is what passes for a high watermark in "action" film these days, then ... christ. Simple exposition, dumping straight into samey scenes of (100%) slow-motion fighting where the thrills seem to be reserved for those who enjoy graphic spear thrusts through bodies, pause, repeat, pause, repeat, lez up, end. Wow. Yeah. Raiders of the Lost Ark it aint.

Tch. You've got me all defensive now.

People in the film/artist field are the roughest critics. You see stuff that the average audience won't. It makes it harder for you to be objective and just go to be entertained. This film was great for me. It's of a genre I like for starters. And like Sin City ...a major accomplishment with no sets. Kick ass...I WILL buy the DVD.
