Every time I post, I get bashed. Every time! People are relentless towards me. I can't stand it. So, I've decided to let you bash me and kill me with negative comments here, so you don't have to in seperate posts. Feel free to be profane. It's better when I hate it more, right?

Why do you think people are so mean to you? Do you think you are so unique and special that you are somehow singled out for mean treatment? Here are your problems:

-You post new threads that are complete non sequiters, and often in the wrong forum. Your post about the Quake modding tool should have gone in 2D/3D discussion. When you post this off-the-wall stuff it comes off as a selfish attempt to get attention. You are not a unique snowflake -- post something that I think is cool and I may be more positive.

-You often make comments that are completely uninformed. For example; of course Blue Sky's new movie is going to look better than an XBox, they have hundreds of the fastest computers so that they can render just a couple minutes of it every night. The sad thing you don't seem to have any idea of how little you know.

Now I am going to give you some example posts of what you should say and do to get a more positive reaction. Feel free to copy and paste the portion in quotes:

    -Spend 10 hours researching perspective, light, anatomy and art technique. Then spend 10 hours and do at least 5 different finished drawings of an original character design. Throw those away and spend 10 hours working on one more finished drawing of that character. Post that image up with the following text;

"I have been working really hard to become a better artist. I know this probably isn't any good, but could you guys give me some pointers on what I should focus on first? Thanks."

    -Look at various sprite animations for 5 hours while paying attention to movement and timing. Then spend 10 hours making a sprite character run animation using only 72x72 pixels. Do two more animations of different characters. Post the best one and say;

"I have been working really hard to become a better artist. I know this probably isn't any good, but could you guys give me some pointers on what I should focus on first?"

You see, people like me have spent many thousands of hours praticing our art. This is a community of artists trying to help each other out. Since you don't know anything about art you have nothing to offer, which means you should show some respect if you want to be tolerated.

He's 12/13 years old, and at that age is starting to figure out who he is.

Morrowindsky81993 (I'm assuming born in August 93) - perhaps a better place for you to play with your raging hormones would be Livejournal or myspace?

It seems you like vintage games - fine, why don't you pop along and find place that specialises in that? This messageboard is geared towards people who make art for the curernt/next generation of games, either as a professional or as a hobbiest, and for people who wish to learn. It is not a creche.

Cmon guys, lighten up a bit, he is obviously just a kid. I have noticed that people are a bit too quick to "bash" people here through both personal experiance and by reading through the forums. Polycount is on of the most unfriendly forums I have ever had the misfortune of discovering, which is sad because its a select few who perpetuate the rudeness and ruin what could be a great community. I have seen numerous other forums bashing polycount for this. Everyone has big balls when they are hidden nicely behind a computer screen it seems. I have not posted in a while for that very reason, I am mature enough to know when to just leave people to their own insanity, this guy is obviously not and if I remember correctly he is a kid so its only natural that he can't take this kind of thing.

I still lurk here looking for good work but alas, I doubt I will be posting here much anymore.

This is one of the friendliest forums I've been to that is still real. Other forums are split into two groups

    1. ass kissing forums: everything you do is great and awesome.

    2. forums full of trolls that bash noobs and don't offer any constructive criticism.

Polycount is tough love, if you post something you will get honest criticism, if you're posting something for a pat on the back and a "job well done", go somewhere else. Expect to be mocked if you repeatedly ignore advice. I honestly think the request area should be removed or have a solid definition.

You have been here a while, talk to a few of the newer members and take a look at some of the bashing that goes on here. Established members of any forum usually have a totaly different experience to new members. Polycount forums are great for crits and tips on your work and yes, some people are childish and deserve a bit of a bashing but there is a line and that line frequently gets crossed. When I was bashed I took it lightly because I deserved it but when people put my character to question and started throwing up personal insults I got pissed. People make mistakes, some learn from them, some don't but persisting in critisisim when the person has admitted fault is not mature or intelligent.

The game art world is a tough place and polycount fits the mold but people should realise that sometimes they go to far.

I am posting this because I felt someone needed to say it, if this issue is adressed then polycount will be as close to perfect as an art forum can be, everyone knows that we artists are a tempermental bunch.
  • skankerzero
This is one of the friendliest forums I've ever been on. A lot of us started off here and have stayed since. I've never been able to register at the other CG forums because they seem too 'fake', too 'steril'.

Any bashing that I've seen in the past 8 years has always been because the poster brought it on themselves.

morrowindsky81993 may not be as bad as tubboy, but looking at the posting trends they're exhibiting so far...

Well you can assume you know where I stand from my own history here. That and this "because I fit in now, I disagree" repeating happening in response to Xaltar. In counterpoint, Im in total agreement with Xaltar. As far as going to say there are conceited (sometimes) responses from some members.
  • skankerzero
I think if you try too hard here, you get called out for it. Acting like an ass will do it too. Being immature does it as well.

If you find that all you're doing is getting flamed, then perhaps you need to step back a bit. Everyone deserves a second chance.

Polycount is polycount. We're not 'generic art site #685132'. We're real. I'm sure there are plenty of new users that have had positive enterances into this community.

Do you need to be here longer? I don't think so. You're doing fine right now. What's to say you can't just begin posting again and do fine? Sure, people might cringe when they see your name, but it's up to you if you're going to make them right about you all along, or prove them wrong.

Assumption skank. Too much assumption. Moreover a comment I found intriguing from a former member.. Conservatism. In the group dynamic isnt as "fun" as it used to be by this member. Has nothing to do with generic or real. Anyhoo, lets stop before we begin.

this a forum of art and one of the best i have ever found. You can get really in the minute help and most of the members are professionals( spelled right ? ) and yep, if you want " ncie job!" or "i love it!" yup go to other forums, if you want people to help you on your art this is the perfect place to start, and most of the users will be honest and really try to help you.

But if you post troll like stuff i cant say it wasnt stupid right ?

At the end of the day people just need to know when to stop, both the bashed and the bashers. A telling off is to be expected but once its done it should be left at that. If someone is told off in one post and noone posts again in the thread the offender will get the point and might learn something but if it turns into a flaming fest the chances are that they will just get pissed and decide that they were the ones in the right. Simple psychology really.

Thanks for renewing my faith in these forums, I had fun here before things got out of hand in one of my threads (well 2 but I learned my lesson :P )

You can't take away the harshness and still have a good art forum. If you could don't you think you would have seen it already somewhere else on the net?

If you need a "friendlier" place there are plenty, but I feel more like friends with the people here than I do at any other forum.

at the end of the day, this is the internet. It's not real. If you feel like everyone is bashing you, you can just turn off the computer and do something else, or look at kittens on 4chan or whatever.

I've been banned from a certain forum for picking fights with a certain resident troll, but thats the way they like it and i didn't fit in. Sure it got my back up, and some guys made personal comments. I realised the heat was too much and got out of their kitchen.

If anything, both of these rather lame and random thread have been saved by kittens of humour, it could have got much worse.

Thats what I did, I was bashed, I took some time off. My coments were not about me thinking I was bashed, they were tips on what I felt could be improved here at polycount. I don't care if I get bashed, I am mature enough to deal but some others are not. Rather than flame the author of this post just ban him, he is after all below the forums age restriction.
  • Mark Dygert
There isn't an age restriction, just a maturity factor. It doesn't matter if you're 12 or 55 if you can't keep your idiotcy in check then you will be laughed at, flamed or just not responded to.

Less talkie talkie, more art you silly silly people.
