Smoothing groups + normal map

I searched and didn't see anything right away. Is it standard to use smoothing groups on a character with a normal map?

Basically try to make everything one single smooth group over the whole low-poly mesh - the normals you render down from your high poly model should see to it that corners seem sharp.
