Currently taking a month off work due to burn out. But I want to look for new work involving more characters. I saw listing for Anime style characters so decided to give it a try. So working on a new character which I found a concept art done by Hans Chen
Aiming to have it done before the end of April which is the length of my time off. So I’m basically taking time off work.......to work...but on my own thing.

So far just vertex painting. Aim is to finish it then port it over to a game engine to see. Still pretty early days, proxy hair and face shape around the jaw line still needs tweaking. Also the size of the features on the face I feel might be a bit big so I might squash them in a bit. Actually, I think the head might be too big overall for the body.
I'll need to look at it with some fresh eyes later
Haven’t done any proper material just normal Colour ramp currently.

I tried tweaking the face a bit, but over time the feel of the character is off compared to the concept so I will have to revisit it after more progress. Did a little bit on the hair as well. Also getting some shadow artifacts which I'll address later or likely in engine.
Mostly been optimizing. Reducing to a few materials and using a texture palette approach. As well as just some normal editing for the face. Still has some issues at the extreme angles.
I also gave her a fake eye glow. But not sure if it comes off as creepy like the Sythns in Alien Isolation. Wasn't able to upload videos so had to convert to gif. Which kind of helps with the lower fps

Hope things are going well on your end of the world
Me starting gouache is not even that long ago and I'm still going at it, it's a nice break from working on the computer all day.
Very cool you started oil painting, would love to see what you painting.
And yah I had various hand issues, from breaking my left wrist almost 10 years ago now to now having some hand/thumb pain from work.
I think we sometimes forget how easily it is to get injured, we need to take care of those hands!
is it when using a pen or wacom that it starts to give our hand issue etc? Yeah, I know what you mean I've actually switched to vertical mouse for my hand a couple of years ago. It was weird at first but gotten use to it.
I am not 100% sure what exactly is hurting my hand, more specifically having thumb issue. I went to get it checked but they didnt seem to find much wrong with it aside from premature/early change that could be associated with overuse osteoarthritis.
My hypothesis is that the way I am gripping on my wacom pen as well as mouse usage is causing me issues.
I bought an ergo grip for my wacom pen and also wrap my brushes handles to make them thicker to decrease their possible strain on my hand.
I had tried a vertical mouse but it was not a big success in my case because I feel the vertical position makes you use your thumb more whenever you need to click which possibly felt worst than a regular mouse.
I found a wacom one with a sort of rest for the thumb thats not too bad?
